Current Priorities

Mobile Sources

The Air Quality Management System (AQMS) includes a framework for addressing mobile source emissions.  Mobile sources are a major contributor of air pollutant and greenhouse (GHG) emissions in Canada.  In 2013, emissions from mobile sources were the second largest contributor to Canada’s GHG emissions, representing 23% of overall GHGs. The mobile sources sector is also the second largest consumer of energy in Canada, while the transportation sector is a cornerstone of the Canadian economy.

CCME is building on the existing range of federal, provincial and territorial initiatives at reducing emissions from mobile sources. Current priorities for mobile sources are:

  • Supporting the deployment of advanced transportation technology such as electric vehicles and the expansion of related infrastructure to achieve further emission reductions. Research is underway on investing in electric vehicle direct current fast charging (DCFC) infrasturcure across Canada.
  • Supporting proper vehicle maintenance and inspection programs by analyzing lessons learned and developing recommendations for CCME and jurisdictions.
  • Encouraging ways to reduce emissions from older diesel vehicles and engines currently in operation on and off-road. A guidance document that provides options for addressing air pollutant emissions from in-use diesel fleets is being developed.
